Networking?
You need a wireless router:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...
If you have a laptop, you need:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...
If you don't have a laptop, you need:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...
You also asked about D-Link. They're a manufacturer of low cost and perhaps low quality computer accessories. They have products comparable to those listed above.

can anybody recommend me good books about networking? im a new beginner to networking... so i wanted a book that can teach me from the basic...

If you want the basics in very elementary terms try the Dummies series. They have one called Networks for Dummies. Has a lot of good information for the beginner and even some tips for the more advanced.

Google 'techrepublic' for the website.
You can buy books from them direct and they will see you right.
Reply:I would also check out the vendor web sites like Cisco. They have some tutorials and references as well.

I was wondering if anyone new any great places to network with people or any great networking events in the boston area?
Networking?
Two things:
1. The best way to network is giving; help people and you will build a huge and strong network.
People notice when you are in just for your own benefit.
2. "Hang around wealthy people, just their energy will help you make money" - Aristotle Onassis, Greek billionaire.
I don't know in which field you are, but probably you'll benefit from getting in contact with high paid doctors, so I'd be a volunteer at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
You'd have a chance to meet lots of wealthy people, either the hospital staff or some of the patients.
Unorthodox?
Networking is a contact sport and you gotta think out of the box; everyone and her grandma go to BNI these days.
Godspeed!

I have my windows xp pc and my mac laptop networked together on a wireless router. Now I am trying to accomplish networking our printer together. Can someone give me a step by step guide on what i need to do to do this?
Networking?
Depending on whether the printer has its own internal network card or if it is attached to one of your computers, its a fairly easy process. If it does have its own network card, you just need to install the printer software on each of the computers. If it is attached to one of the computers, after you install the software for that particular comuter, you need to share the printer is it is available to the second computer. The only thing left to do from this point is to install the software for the second computer and direct this computer to find the printer attached to the other computer. Sounds a bit more complicated than it really is. If you like my answer, let me know how the printer is attached to your network or email me and I can give you a little better instructions.
Reply:Just go to control panel click on printers and faxes.then click add printer choose the box add network printer and have it search for networked printers. Choose that printer and the software will install automatically
Reply:Install the printer drivers on at least one computer.
Make sure all computers are connected to the network.
Go to: Start %26gt; Settings %26gt; Printers and Faxes %26gt; Add Printer
Click Next.
1. If the drivers are installed on the computer you are currently on, select the first option (default) and click Next.
2. If the drivers are not installed on the computer you are currently on, select the second option ("A network printer...") and click Next.
Follow the rest of the steps on the Wizard.
You should do the same process for each computer.
Good luck!

Suppose u r in field of networking, according to you what is that in field of networking that makes it stand out among others?

I love my line of work because I have to really use my brain. I get paid to figure things out. I am a support engineer for one of the major software vendors; I never get bored because every day is challenging. Plus the money and the benefits are great, and I usually get to work from home.

Reply:I think what makes networking stand out is that you can't be just a network tech. well not easily most companies want you to be a sysadmin.
Now being a sys admin i find is something special youll never beable to find in another job. Youll have your desk but you will spend more time helping people out around the office. if there isnt any work there you get to spend time configing the routers and servers. Depending on the company this is the true feeling of GOD. I am a mac sys admin so i am root and root is god. If its a big company you hold in your hands the companies ablity top run smoothly if your not there the world becomes a harsh place for your boss and everyone else cause you have the knowledge which means you get treated very well. also you get to fiddle with thousands sometimes hundreds of thousands of dallors in equipment.
This is my favorite part i spent this week in a lab that had a price tag of just over $500,000. I am a geek so this is hugely exciting i could never afford to buy one of these servers and i got to configure them all make sure everything was backed up and redunadant so no matter what happens no one in the company would notice a single hickup even if the main server crashed.
then once all thats done its a pretty easy job just relax and help the idiots who cant get there password to work cause caps is on.
and i mean its a feeling of real power after configureing a server room then going to a city two hours away right now and i can config from here i can also get in and see what someone is doing with their computer.
I would say networking is fun running the wires and configing routers but if you can get the sys admin job its way more fun in the job run.

You may need to check the Firewall settings to see if local networks are allowed. Just turn it off for a test and see if the network then shows.
Reply:open ur Local Area Connection Status then Properties then check the Internet protocol ( TCP/IP ) Install The Protocols u need it's ( NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBios Compatible Transport Protocol ) and ( Network Monitor Driver )
that's all
hope this way works with you
take care

check the workgroup names of all of ur computers. make it same. check whether file printing and sharing is enabled.
create a folder, share it and give full access to everyone in all the systems. Check again.

I have very basic knowledge in network, but im really good in computing, system config, maintanance, installation etc. i courrently have a network at home 2 computers with a conexent router, i knew how to set it up as i already had knowledge on what everything meant. Id like to have some kind of certificate to show i have knowledge in I.T. what can you suggest to learn basic networking and what certificate would be best for starters?
Networking...?
Depends on where you want to go. If you want to be a PC Tech all your life, get the A+ and N+ certifications. If you want to spend your life routing networks for big corporations, get your Cisco certifications (CCNA, etc.)
If you want to open all the doors, go with Microsoft. You can start with just an MCP or two, and work toward the MCSE. That certification will open just about any door you want to walk through.
Reply:CompTIA offers a program called Network+ that you could use to study networking basics and principles.
http://certification.comptia.org/network...
Reply:N+ is good. Can add CCNA afterwards
Reply:work with it. nothing can replace hands on experience in this business. but you could start with an N+ certificate.
Reply:Comptia A+ and Network+ are both great entry level certs to go for.
A+ is geared towards basic computer setup, maintainence (things you say you already know) but having the cert makes it easier for people to identify with your skillsets.
Network+ deals with most aspects of networking on a very basic level, but will help establish a good foundation for you if you eventually want to branch off into higher level certs.
You can read up more on both of them at:
http://certification.comptia.org/
Reply:TIA Certificate (you can find them on line at CompTIA.com) go for networking essentials.

General Networking Questions?
Ok, so I am good with computers in general, but my weakness is Networking by far. so........
1) We had someone set up our network for us, I have no idea how to add a comptuer to my network when I can see my network in "view workgroup computers".
2) I want to set up a server for everyone to be able to save documents on it.
3)Is there any way to combine two networks in the same house to act as one?
4)If I am hosting a website, is a switch safer to use than a Hub?
I need to know how to do everything in the list above, PLEASE HELP ME!!!
thanks!
P.S. Can any of you explain, somewhat in detail, how i would do everything above
Networking?
1) Goto My Network Place -%26gt; (on the left window pane) click Set-up a Home Network {be sure to enable Printer Sharing and the name of the workgroup must be the same with other pc)
2)Create a shared folder on your server pc, disable all folder permissions that restricts access. Then of each pc you should Map it as a network drive. you can do this by going to the shared folder across the network, right click on it then select Map Network Drive.
3)I'm not sure with this but you can try this: goto Control Panel -%26gt; Network Connections. You'll see different network connections in there (select more than one connection by using CTRL + click on icon you want to combine ) right click on either icons then choose Bridge Connection
4)In terms of security, I don't think that a switch or a hub has security. I think it's in the router. Choose the best router you can find. (FYI: a switch its better to choose than a hub because it divides network banwidth almost equally not like a hub)
