If you want the basics in very elementary terms try the Dummies series. They have one called Networks for Dummies. Has a lot of good information for the beginner and even some tips for the more advanced.

You can buy books from them direct and they will see you right.
Reply:I would also check out the vendor web sites like Cisco. They have some tutorials and references as well.
