Does business networking work?

Reading a careers book it says it is a good idea to do networking - to build up a network of ex-work colleagues, people in other businesses, networking organisations, and cold-calling companies to speak to and get to know people.

Has anyone tried this? And did it help you in your career?

Does business networking work?
DEFINITELY - networking can help you in your business and in your career

You get to know about job openings before others learn about it. Or someone can recommend you to their bosses for the position because they happened to know you. Or they can introduce you to people who can help you - whether you need funding for a business idea or getting information.

In fact if you are in business, networking is very critical as it can help you land new clients, find investors, find mentors who can guide you, and just someone to pretty much bounce off ideas.

That's why they say never to burn your bridges when you leave a company, because the network you built in that previous employment may prove valuable later on.
Reply:Oh yes! I know a woman in our department who got job just with the help of networking... she is so lucky .. she is so friendly and always planning group lunch and stuff.. gets to work around noon and leaves at 5:00 or something like that.. she has made friends with the bosses and their networks as well ...

Business networking works...
Reply:i would say so , i know many business people who swear by it i know it sounds lame but i would say to my husband can we not go eat somewhere else , he'd say no its networking etc etc and sure a shot he has gotten stacks of business simply through eating in the right places and mixing with the people who may need his business or may someone who might need it , then they tell others so you mix with them etc your reading about it so theres no need for me to waffle on , but its worked for him no end in fact its been the main stay of his IT business.

best of luck
Reply:All that networking means is that you take a structured approach to the people you communicate with. You keep a note of who you've spoken to, what they do and where you met them. You always help other people if they are looking for someone by referring to the 'contacts' you have in your list - broker those meetings if you want to earn extra brownie points. Be seen as a good networker and the right people will be there for you when you need them.
Reply:I've never done it myself, but I've hired plenty of people who used networking to learn of an opening and apply for it. It does work because many jobs are never advertised. It also happens that there is no official opening, but that a particular individual is so compelling that the business searches for an opening for him/her. These jobs only exist because the individual comes to the attention of the organization and the only way to do that is by networking.

Networking and Website Design and Programming. im looking at doing a course for this.?

Once ive completed it. What type of jobs does Networking and Programming involve?

Whats the pay like would i be able to support a family when im ready to have one?

What are the basics to programming and networking. What do you actually do from a day to day basis??

thanks for your replies!!

Networking and Website Design and Programming. im looking at doing a course for this.?
You're probably not going to be able to enter a programming job, or career for that matter, after one class - especially if they are cramming networking, web design, and programming all into one course.

After a series of these types of classes (probably an associates degree) you should be able to get a job as a network administrator, a system administrator, or a programmer, depending on what jobs are available in your area.

What you would do from day to day would vary upon which job you are hired for - people are not generally hired to do all of those things in one business. You are much more likely to do only programming, or only web design/development, or only system administration.

What you'll do from day to day? Well, that'll vary depending on what you get hired for, because you're certainly not going to do all of those things at one job. Any of these jobs, however, is a decent job. You'll be in an office, no hard labor, and probably work 9-5. Salary will depend on your location and the company for which you work. Most likely, you will receive some kind of benefits.

If you are serious about becoming one of the above listed jobs, I would highly consider getting an Associates Degree. Anybody that tries to convince you that you will be able to walk away from this single class as a webdesigner, a programmer, and a network administrator is LYING. Each of those subjects often have their own sets of classes, so don't be taken for your money. Check out your community college and learn things well.

Good Luck! - If you have any more questions send me an email (see profile.)
Reply:Just look at your hotjobs in your area.

Its about Networking...........?

When I open task manager and go to networking, it shows my adapter name i.e. my connection name, Network utilisation, link speed %26amp; status. Now my question is what is networking utilisation, it always shows 12-14% only though I'm continuously on the net with some heavy download. My linkspeed it shows 480.8Kbps (Not KBps), what is this connection type I meen is it Broadband or normal or what, though I have asked from my ISP the normal one. Please help......thanx

Its about Networking...........?
That's very likely because your adapter can handle alot more

than you're outside link can provide.

I.e. if you have a 100mbit network card connected to a broadband

dsl modem with 6mbit you can easily see that the network utilization

won't go up too far. It's calculated by the link speed of the adapter.

That doesn't have to be the speed you're actually connected with

on the other side of the modem or router.

Networking of a Window XP computer with Window MCE computer?

Hi:

I can't get Networking of a Window XP Home computer with Window MCE computer to work so that I can watch the MCE recorded program from the networked XP Home computer.

Any luck?

Networking of a Window XP computer with Window MCE computer?
On the XP computer go to My Network Places. On the left is a menu. One of the entries is "Set up a home or small office network". Click on it. It will bring up a wizard that will ask a series of questions. Answer them as simply as possible (but answer Yes to "Do you want to turn on Printer and File Sharing") and keep clicking on Next. You will reach a screen saying "You're almost done...", and saying that you need to run the Network Setup wizard once on each computer. Choose the item that says "Create a Network Setup Disk". This will create a floppy disk. Follow the directions to run this disk on your other computer (the "MCE" computer).

Networking national defence system a good idea?

I saw a documentary recently where US is networking their entire defense systems. Do you think networking them and relying more on computers a good idea.

I can understand that computers are precise in targeting but they can be easily hacked or malfunctioned. I guess one electromagnetic bomb can shut down our entire defense system.

I just want to know why is US spending billions of dollars on these projects, do they have any back ups?

Networking national defence system a good idea?
These defense systems are built for the expectation. EMP wont effect it at all. The exterior protects it from that.
Reply:In order to hack that system, it would have to be possible to access it outside the system, and the defense department would never allow that. Government systems are expected to conform to what is called the 5 9's of accuracy, it must be 99.999% reliable in testing before it is deployed, leaving a maximum unexpected downtime of about 3 minutes per year. I'm sure such a network would be distributed, meaning an EMP would only affect the network within its blast radius, the rest of the network would compensate for the downtime.

Alot of larger companies will pay you a salary and expect a certain amout of after-hours work and call-out to be included in the salary. They will never tell you what that certain amout will be. Just assume it means any and all.

Networking a windows ME system with a Vista system.?

I have not done much networking, so could someone please tell me how to network a windows vista system with a ME system to enabe LAN gameplay

Networking a windows ME system with a Vista system.?
Buy a CROSSOVER CABLE, as opposed to a standard Ethernet cable. They look the same but are not wired the same inside the sheathing. Plug it between the two computers in the (8-wire) NIC RJ-45 jacks. The two Windows operating system should see each other immediately. You might still need to configure some settings on one or both machines or in the game programs.

If the machines are farther apart, you can use standard cables plugged into a hub, switch, or router LAN jacks.

Networking Experts what are your Experiences?

Let me give you an example of what I mean.

I've leanrt things about video cards, as from the book, how they work, different types etc. But from my experience, I learnt:

1. Never use onboard video, it's slow and cheap.

2. Always buy good quality video cards from Nvida,Tnt, don't bother with the other guys.

3. I've seen 16mb of video ram, Vs 256mb, makes a difference, you'll notice the speed of the graphics faster.

4. Get AGP video cards, because PCI ones, you'll get lots of conflicts with other pci cards.

5. Get extra fans because video cards increase the temperature.

So you see all my experiences. The books didn't teach me these things. So I'm just starting Networking but I want experiences.e.g. Like you've learnt when forming a star-topology that it's best to .. blabla. Liek you've learnt a quicker way or short cut to forming a network in 5 minutes. Stuff like this.

Thanks

Networking Experts what are your Experiences?
Well all the experience that I had in Networking was my own. I used to disassemble my PC and reassemble them. In this way, I made sure that, I could assemble a PC, no matter its brand.

For the VGA Card and other stuff, you have to be in constant touch with the latest market. I usually go to the computer centers once a week and get to know the latest products. As for one of your suggestions, even AGP Card in old now. the best is the PCI Express Card.

By handling these devices and various stuff yourself, you would learn them easily. And for the books, you cannot get enough knowledge with books because they dont explain to you the practical approach to a problem.

The best thing you can do is to start right now to assemble a PC and trying to study the motherboard structure. Once you get used to it, networking is nothing.

Networking question!?

I have all linksys devices for networking my computers around the house to the main computer with the router, %26amp; i just purchased a belkin usb something or other to connect one computer upstairs wirelessly to the main computer, but i can't seem to find a network connection once i installled the belkin usb thing. how can i find it?

Networking question!?
Is your linksys router capable of doing wireless?

If so log in to the router setup and ensure it is enabled.

Is the belkin adapter installed properly, using the cd that came with it or through windows?

Good Luck
Reply:You won't want to hear this, but here goes. I have never been able to make any OEM's stuff work with a different OEM's stuff. The Belkin is not one of my favorite platforms either. I have a Belkin bluetooth device that has never worked on any operating system with any device. Good luck with that.
Reply:Do you have a wireless router or access point? If not you won't connect.
Reply:Did you buy a wireless router?

If so, look under 'My Network Places' in Windows, and click on the side under 'Network connections'

When you find the one that's the Belkin USB you just installed that says wireless ... open that connection and make sure it finds the name of your network ... which is typically the manufacturer of your router if you haven't changed it

Networking
Reply:| suppose if somebody have done mcsa and ccna both is there r lots of chances for job?
MCSEs and MCSAs are a dime a dozen, and due to the prevalence of boot camps that get people certified by simply memorizing test answers they have become essentially worthless. CCNA certification has a little more value but only for organizations using Cisco equipment which limits your options.

What you are looking for is a skill that will set you apart from the crowd and is important for all businesses. I'd recommend security certifications or project management.

Networking questions?

I am a novice to any networking......

1 - I have installed DSL and I still get the working offline..Connect Retry window...I have already set it that it should look for the broadband connection. how can I stop that? It has gotten alot worse since I have added the ethernet card mentioned below.

2 - I installed the modem using the USB option. I have decided to add a wireless network so I added the ethernet card. Now I can't configure since I have already given the ip address to the DSL modem and can't give to the ethernet connection....how can I fix this?

Networking questions?
Disconnect the USB cable and just use the cat5 network cable. It goes between your ethernet card and the DSL modem. You may need to re-install the software , it controls the behavior of the DSL modem.
Reply:Please provide more information. What is the make/model of your DSL modem and what version of windows are you using? (Windows XP, 2000...?)

You can usually do a factory reset of your modem's configuration by pressing a little button with a paperclip on the back of the modem. If you provide to make and model of the modem I can look it up.
Reply:Most DSL Modems these days are also routers. This will come into play later.

The problem you are getting with "Working Offline" is a problem easily fixed. What you need to do is make sure that your Ethernet Card is installed and working properly, and that it is Enabled in "Network Connections." Also you will need to go into Internet Options and set it to "Never Dial a connection" on the connections tab. Once you have done this Connect your Modem to your Computer using the Modem. Check your ip address now. (Start --%26gt; Run...type in "cmd" press %26lt;enter%26gt;...type in "ipconfig" press %26lt;enter%26gt;) You should get a Valid IP address of something like 192.168.x.x. You will also get a default Gateway similar to your IP Address. In most cases you can type this Gateway into your Web Browser and it will surf into your modem.

A lot of DSL modems store the Connection information within the modem itself, rather than you having to click connect all the time it keeps your connection "Alive" Unfortunatly this gets in the way of your Wireless Router that you are planning to use with it. You will need to get with your ISP and find out if your connection is a PPPoE, or Bridged Ethernet. Most of the time it is a PPPoE conneciton. Have your ISP Tech Support Guide you through setting your modem into "Bridged Mode"

Most ISPs will not assist you insetting your router up correctly as it is not their hardware to support, and will refer you to the router manufacturer, who will refer you to your ISP...a major loop that i can't let you get into.

The next step is to Take your Ethernet cord out of the back of your computer, and plug it into the "Internet" Port on your router. Now...get another ethernet cord (usually supplied with the router) and run it from port 1 on the router, to the back of your computer. Your computer should get a new IP address, and a New Default Gateway. Type the defualt gateway into the Address bar of your web browser and surf to it...*note some routers will ask for a username and a password...input the default information specified in the manual provided with the router*

Once you have made it to this point you are almost home. Find the section within the router's configuration page that pertains to connection type. If your connection is PPPoE you will change it from something like "Obtain IP Automatically" to "PPPoE". You will see a place for your ISP's information (username and password) Save the settings on this page once you have input this information....it should be set....Open up another session of your browser...and see if it connects to your home page. If so...you are there. If not...then doublecheck your login information...you may have to call into your ISP to make sure that you don't have to add the domain name to the end of your username or anything.

Have Fun and good luck

Networking event?

An accounting company invited me to attend its networking event next week. we are probably going to have a dinner, then to see a baseball game. i really want to take this opportunity to know some key people inside the company and also to get an internship or job.

however, i never attended any networking events before; so i have been wondering what should i say and do would be appropriate during the dinner and the baseball game?

thank you in advance

ps. i just graduated this past May with my BS in accounting.

Networking event?
At a networking event you should dress semi-professional; at least wear clean pants and probably a polo but maybe not sneakers. This varies by location and industry but could also be relaxed for a sporting event. You could probably ask for clarification if you want to make sure your attire fits the crowd.

Networking is a great way to get to know potential customers and employers, so you should be friendly and open, but not drunk and disorderly. In a way it is an opportunity for them to interview you, evaluate your soft skills and see what it would be like to work with you. Even though it might be a great story, keep that in mind before going into excessive details about how you hooked up at the last frat party you went to as you could offend somebody who would have influence over weather or not you would be hired.

You should try to meet as many people as possible, and at least act interested before politely excusing yourself (food, bathroom, phone calls, etc. make good cover for this) if you are not interested a certain topic or conversation line. This is a great opportunity for you to find out what the company is like to work for, a what they are really looking for. Should you land an interview, you will then be that much more prepared. I would suggest preparing some brief questions and having a short 15~30 second introduction if you really want to impress them. You can get some question ideas if you search for "informational interviews" on most career sites or google. Let them know why you want to work there, let them see what a great person you are and the rest should follow.

The bottom line is keep it positive, be friendly and approachable, and you shouldn't have any problems.

Best Wishes,

Matt
Reply:First and foremost accept my hearty congratulations on your graduation.

Attending a networking event is not a problem but an opportunity to sell yourself positively to the world.

Just appear at the event in a cool and descent outfit but not too flamboyant style.

Exchange pleasantries in a well calculated and confident manner. Be a good listener and knowledge seeker than lousy type.

Show your stuff as an enlightened, knowledgeable and fresher from graduating school. Your knowledge of accounting profession will always put you on edge above others if well utilised.

Xbox 360 Networking Problem?

The settings on my Xbox are fine, i checked everything. but it's not my network that's the problem, it's XBOX LIVE, for some dumb reason, it can't find it. The system goes through a set of tests, it looks somewhat like this...

Networking Adapter - Wireless Bridge

Wireless Network - Connected

IP Address - Confirmed

DNS - Confirmed

MTU - Confirmed

ICMP - Confirmed

XBOX LIVE - Failed

Nat -

i don't get it, there isn't any maintence going on at Xbox Live, and my friends are online. So what gives? i go to "more info" and it doesn't say anything, this is the first time i've seen my Xbox do this.

W: 0000-0021

X: 0000-000D

Y: 0C88-1C00

Z: 0000-0000

did any1 else get that code or any one know how to fix it?

Reply:Ok I'm pretty sure that it actually is your IP address, but I'm kind of sure that I'm wrong. You should call Microsoft's help line thingy and ask them.
Reply:Same exact thing just happened to me, like 10 minutes ago, tell me if you can find the problem, because I really want to play right now.

hey, check your status (or error) codes, click more info and press y, it should tell you, lets see if we have the same errors

*edit*

no, I got

W: 000-0021

X: 0000-F001

Y: 0C88-1CE0

Z: 0000-0000

*edit*

It would seem this is happening all over the world and xbox engineers are trying to fix it. Hope they can work fast. They say you're supposed to disconnect everything, including routers, and wait a few minutes, then restart. you may only get to play a few games. then get booted off.

Networking my PS3 with wireless?

Im pretty much what you could call "techdead" - in other words I got no idea about internet connections, networking, wireless and all the other fun stuff that this technological boom has brought about.

However I have myself a PS3 and i'd like to be able to play my mates online via the wireless connection - only thing is I got no idea what im doing. I believe I have all the necessary hardware, ie wireless router and a PS3, but its just not happening for me.

Ill put it to you this way, a few steps into the setup it asks for an SSID code or something along those lines, where do i find this?

Do I need to change or alter anything on my PC to make the connection work? - such as the network settings or disabling the I/net on the PC when using the PS3.

Quite simply ive been searching through help guides and everything %26amp; im just not seeing the solution.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated in finally helping me get into online gaming (something ive wanted to do for years)

Thanks

Networking my PS3 with wireless?
Your SSID code is the pw you setup when you first installed your wireless router on your pc. So if your friends come over with their laptop and want to access your wireless internet they would need to scan to see the available wireless networks in your local area then click on yours, lets say "Martini Wireless" and you would have to give them the pw so they can access it.

If you don't remember your pw you can try to hit the 'reset' button on your router it's usually a small pin size button and reinstall it again or call tech support. Or if you never changed it when you first installed the router, I believe the default pw is "admin" lowercase, you might want to try that first. Good luck.
Reply:Just go to the connections and have it scan for your router. Once you see the name of your router, select and and if there is a passcode, put the code in. It will test the connection and you should be done. I think it was wanting an SSID code because you were doing the manual setup. Good luck!

Networking jobs?

Is it essential for someone looking for a Networking Job, to first get Professional Qualifications such as CCNA/CCNP/MCSE/etc ?

Is a general BSc in Network engineering not sufficient ?

Networking jobs?
the degree is the best thing, but as you progress a company may ask you to get certified in one the programs.

the most sought after are the mcse and ccna. if you have a bs do not worry about them a company will higher you and pay for them if they deam necessary.
Reply:The single most important factor is job experience, however a certification can definitely be helpful in getting an entry level position.

Help with networking?

i was told i needed a router for networking two computers, my question is do some computers come with net adapters and is that the same as a networking card that you buy seperate from the router for a wireless network ???? please some one help i am so confused

Help with networking?
To be on any network, wired or wireless, your computer needs a NIC (Network Interface Card). If you do not want to use a router, you can opt for a switch/hub. Now one more important thing here is, whether you are trying to share internet on both computers or just trying to connect each other (no intenet sharing). For internet sharing, you can have 2 NICs on one computer, use one for internet and other to connect to second computer. If not internet sharing needed then you can connect two computers with one NIC on each, but for that you will need a cable different from CAT5, I guess its called coaxial cable. It looks like CAT5 cable except the internal connections are different.

But using a router/switch/hub simplifies the process a lot
Reply:to connect 2 computers directly together you need a crossover cable. They will need to be on the same IP network say 172.1.1.1 one computer and put the subnetmask at 255.255.255.0 and then assign the other computer as 172.1.1.2 ( or anything else up to 254). and again use the same subnet mask of 255.255.255.0.

Then enable sharing on a drive and you'll be able to map to that drive from the other comuter.

To use a straight thru cable and arouter set the router up as 172.1.1.1 and the computers up as 172.1.1.2 and 172.1.1.3.

Most modern computers come with a LAN port to plug the cable into.
Reply:from what i know computers don't have net adapters pre-installed in them, and no it's not the same thing
Reply:You need a router to split the internet access and for setting up the network easily.

You also need a network card (ie NIC) for each computer you want to put on the network. These can be a network card (looks like a large phone jack on the back/side) or it can be wireless.

You set up the router per the manufactures specifications (its really easily done, just run the CD / follow the fold out) and boom your network is done.

Then follow the instructions for the same on the other PCs. There is also a networking wizard in the control panel on the Networking section and in there you will see the "Network Setup Wizard"

Once you get the hardware set up (ie router and NIC cards) then run that and use the same information between both and "TADA" you have a network.

Networking question, about servers.?

ok here is the question, I am running a server 2003 on my network, which plugs into a linksys router via the gigaport. then that goes to the dsl box. last night i shut the server down, and then I was not able to get to the internet on any of my computers. I want it so the internet connection does not depend upon the server. also where might i find a networking guide to use, and learn from that i could print out. i know this is complex so if you would be able to talk to me about it over the pphone just say so in your response, and i will email you my number,

thanks.

Networking question, about servers.?
oh computer geek eh i rubbed ur moms feet but i dint use my hands by the way im 10
Reply:If your computers are gaining access to the internet through your server, then you would have a problem. If your server is the default gw for your lan instead of the linksys, then you would also have a problem.

1. No. You have the right hardware

2. If the client for Microsoft networking installed on each machine?

3. If so, each machine must belong to the same workgroup.

I stuck the URL to the Microsoft home networking page for you below. Note: there are tons of good sites that discuss setting up home networks, don't be afraid to google.

Good luck!
Reply:Nope, they should both work of the same modem. You'll just have to set-up a peer-to-peer network if you want the laptop and the PC to talk to each other, use MS networking wizard to set it up
Reply:i dont have much experience i only work on the already networked pcs and never tried to network them..

How TCPIP networking can be done through Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is a standard for short-range "ad-hoc" networks.Although Bluetooth is used for many simple applications, such as the Bluetooth headset for a mobile phone, these do not involve networking. Describe the way (the various layers and their purposes) that TCPIP networking can be done through Bluetooth.

How TCPIP networking can be done through Bluetooth?
There is a networking profile that is included in the bluetooth standard, but not all bluetooth devices support it. You might want to look at using the dialup networking profile if your trying to establish an Internet connection to a device like a cellphone.

Plzzz suggest me ,regarding networking?

Hi all. Im a indian student and im planning to go to Canada to study MEng. in Networking. Now this is a 1 year program and its cost is expensive. But anyhow im very much interested to study this. I like Canada very much and I prefer to study and work over there. What I don’t know is about the job opportunities related to IT – Networking / Computer Networking in Canada. Are there good jobs in Canada related to Networking. I mean are there vacancies available for freshers who finish this degree. Will I be able to find a good job after I graduate. Anybody who live in Canada or anybody who can provide any information which could be helpful to me please reply. if possible please include your e-mail address along

with your reply.

Plzzz suggest me ,regarding networking?
I know this much, as a non-resident you must have a work permit to have job in Canada. Further the employer must show that the job can not be filled by a Canadian citizen. With the amount of IT jobs being outsourced to India and other countries, there are many out of work people in Canada that were doing network jobs. So I would not count on being able to get a permit.

Networking problem please solve.... for switches?

hi. there are 6 switches of 100 mbps %26amp; 16 ports are installed at my office. which are connected with each other. before two month ago there were only 3 switches. as we increased the number of switches the networking speed become slow and client database cannot be connect regularly by the server. So we are planing to pruchase one 24 ports 1000 mbps switch which will be connected with server and all the other swithches will be connected with this switch. all the nodes will be connected with other switches. I think this idea will be better but i havenot confirm about it. would u please help me the confirm this idea for increasing networking speed and regularly connection of application database from client to server as we are working only one LAN.

Networking problem please solve.... for switches?
In my experience it is not good to connect switches to switches unless they have specfic ports on them for other switches to connect to. If you have just randomly plugged 6 switches together your going to have serious trouble because the network signals are going to start looping and the switches will not handle this like routers can. You should only have your switches connected to the gateway not to each other.
Reply:If the speed is really slow then you probably have a faulty port on one of the switches. Bad ports put out noise which really slow things down, many messages have be sent again. You can find this with the right gear. If you check round-trip delays, you can take out each switch until it all goes fast again.

You need to properly design the network, trying to make all the routes from clients to servers going through the least number of switches. Each switch will add a bit more delay.
Reply:get a websmart switch as the core switch.

probably someone on network is using quite a lot of bandwidth.

Use the QoS function to control the bandwidth by each port/IP

What is a Home Networking Package (wireless)? How do you install one?

Just wanted to know what a Home Networking Package (wireless) is, and how to install one (or, if you know of a website that can explains step-by-step how to install a Home Networking Package, that'd be awesome).

Also, what contents or special features does a Home Networking Package have? What are the price ranges / how much does a Home Networking Package cost?

What is a Home Networking Package (wireless)? How do you install one?
Yes David is right, I have home networking as I have two computers and it consists of a modem and netgear USB adapter but the modem also has ports for wired connection which we use as the netgear tends to slow down the connection however when my son comes home with his notebook he connects to the net using the netgear as it's more convenient.

The package came with the disk to run and gives the option to connect with the wire or the usb so I ran the wire option on our computers and the usb option on my sons notebook.

I have a very fast connection 8,000kbs so the usb connection isn't slowed down much anyway but if you have a slow connection I suggest you stick to the wired option.

Hope this helps

Mel ;-)
Reply:dont order it as they will charge you a premium. you can do that yourself at way cheaper with a wireless router and adapters. 80% the computers connect to eachother automatically (wiht allowed firewall)
Reply:It is a vague marketing term.

It probably consists of a wireless router (possibly with a built in DSL modem) and one or two USB wireless adaptors (and probably cost about £50).

Instructions should be in the box.
Reply:Get a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router. It has step-by-step instructions on how to setup your network. Allows you to share your cable/DSL internet connections and has 4 ethernet ports as well as the wireless access. They also have great tech support in case you have trouble. The cost is around $60 at places like Best Buy or Office Depot. Hope this helps.

Windows XP Pro SP2 Networking file sharing problem.?

I have a networking problem currently with my small 4 computer network. For some reason, my primary computer has suddenly decided to deny access to its shared documents folder on the network, saying that access is denied. It workd fine before, but after completely redoing windows on 1 computer, 3 of the computers cannot "see" the 4th. The 4th computer can see the others and access them, but the others get the access denied message. How can I fix this? I have tried setting permissions, but the options for this dont seem to exist, and running the network setup wizard does nothing either. Any help would be extremely helpful. Thanks.

On the computer that u can't access to just share any folder and u will be able to access. Make sure to do share for everyone.

Sysadmin/networking or software development career?

Hello,

I am from India and I am on the verge of completing my BCA (computer degree). I am interested in both software development and Linux systems administration and networking. But people's attitude seems to me to be that systems administration which seems to be known as nothing but networking in India, is a lowly job as compared to software development. I want to know how correct is this thinking and whether it would be wise for me to choose a systems administration/networking career or whether I should choose a software development career.

Easy networking software?

I just bought an Apple Airport Extreme router for my FUTURE home network. I have 1 MacBook (wireless), 2 XP desktops %26amp; 1 Windows 98 desktop. I need to find an easy to use networking program so I can share files %26amp; stuff. I had a 1 month free trial version of "Network Magic" about a year ago for the 3 desktops and it worked wonderfully however, I am now poor and need a free program. This program MUST be compatible for OS X, Windows XP %26amp; 98 (with an Airport Extreme). Any help would be great! Thanx.

Easy networking software?
I don't think there exists a FREE program that will be compatible on that many OS versions - Windows 98 is hardly supported by anyone anymore (including MS) and the companies that write "freeware" do not write it to be compatible across MAC/PC platforms unfortunately. I investigated this a while back and came up empty handed myself. Good luck!
Reply:For the Windows machines - it's pretty easy

Make sure they are set up for the same workgroup

Make sure they are configured to obtain an IP address automatically.

Make sure "File and Print sharing" is enabled.

Make sure that each machine has at least one folder that has the properties set to shared

That will allow all windows machines to work together

For the MAC - I'm handing you off to the web site below. It shows that MAC has the ability built in (it should, it's based on BSD) to network with an PC. But I don't have a MAC here, just Linux machines :) so I can't test it for you.

Looks like they all should work with no extra software.

For more answers about connecting Macs, try Googling "network mac pc"

Will networking with Windows Vista and Windows XP work?

I currently have Windows XP and 2 other computers connecting to one machine in my house. The one machine has a printer installed on it. I have it networked so that the other computers will be able to use it and it works great right now. I'm just wondering if I will be able to continue networking my printer as I am now in Windows Vista. I will only get Vista on the machine that has the printer which means the other computers will be XP.

Windows XP Home Networking Error???

I was trying to set up a home network between Windows XP and Windows ME. When I tried to create a network on Windows XP, it said it couldn't finish because it had an error. I ran the XP networking wizard on Windows ME and it worked. How can I set up a network manually on Windows XP?? Also for your information, I have DSL and a router. Both computers are wired to the router and are connected to the internet correctly. Thanks a lot for your help!!

Windows XP Home Networking Error???
I am a bit rusty on the ME, but all you need to do is make sure that the workgroup is the same for XP as ME. You can right click on my computer on the XP machine and select properties. After the window opens pick the computer name tab and make sure the workgroup name matches the name on the ME machine. The Router should auto assign the IP address for both machines. All you need to do then is make sure you share any files you want to see on both computers and you should be gtg.

Wireless Networking Adapter?

ethernet to the router works just fine .. Make sure you get the right cable.

Wireless home networking issues with 3 computers (2 laptops) (1 desktop). Help?

Hi, I have 3 computers in the house. The desktop is a Compaq and the 2 other laptops are Dells. Currently, 2 computers are in the wireless network, one laptop and the desktop, as I can share files and the printer between the 2. The other laptop is supposedly in the network, but I can't access the files from the other 2 computers. All of the computers are in the same workgroup under the same name. I have ran network setup wizard and wireless networking wizard countless of times but to no avail. Sharing files is enabled on all computers and all run on Windows XP Home with SP2. Windows firewall allows file and printer sharing on all of them. I don't know what to do now. Any new suggestions would be awesomeness. Thanks!

Wireless home networking issues with 3 computers (2 laptops) (1 desktop). Help?
i don't know if this will help you, but i have just been informed that due to my Norton's 2006 anti-virus i cannot enable mine. and i cannot successfully uninstall it. good luck.
Reply:regardless of whether or ont they are on the same workgroup you should be able to file share as long as:

each machine can connect to eacother and file sharing is enabled.

Check connectivity: first try pinging the problematic machine from a working machine. Just because they can see the internet doesn't mean they see eachother.

Ensure that file sharing is enabled and the "Server" service is started and set to automatic on the machine you're trying to connect to.

Try connecting by IP address rather than UNC name (\\%26lt;ip%26gt;\%26lt;sharename%26gt;) instead of \\%26lt;machinename%26gt;\%26lt;sharename%26gt;

if IP works but name is not, you might make a host file that usees the name to point to the right machine. (yahoo/google search host file)

Networking Problem.?

Two computers of my network shows each other in 'Network Neighborhood' but while accesing both the computer it gives message '\\computer name is not accessible. The computer or sharename could not be found. Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again.' I have networking without IP addresses in windows 98 %26amp; XP, and the other computers are accessible by both these computers.

Networking Problem.?
I have a troubleshooting guide at my site below that should help solve this. Hope this helps
Reply:You need to share the folders and/or drives before the other computer can pick them up. simple to do. Click on my computer. Right click the folder or drive you want to share, give the folder a recognizable sharename, click on all subfolder too if you want everything else. Click apply, wait for all files to be changed. Then, go to the other computer and search Network. everything you shared will be there. After you are done moving files, unshare the folders for more security.
Reply:Did you actually share at least one folder on each machine? If you can see the other PC, but nothing is shared, then there is nothing to open. Be very careful what you share, not everything should ever be accessible on the LAN. Your machines must also belong to the some workgroup.

Java networking question?

When it comes to Java networking, I'm pretty clueless. I am aware of ServerSocket and Socket.

I can get two instances of my program running, and one be the server and the other the client. The one with the server I run a client off of as well, and the one that is the client I only run an instance of the client. I am able to successfully connect, but the second I try and read information sent from the server, it locks up. This happens when I use the "read()" and "readLine()" methods.

I am trying to get basic networking just to start--a communication between two JTextAreas between two different users. Basically, I'm trying to get a chat program working for the time being, and as soon as that's working, I'm confident I can get the competitive functionality of two games over the network running smoothly.

Do you know of any sources of a basic Server/Client program with two JTextAreas or any good referances to basic Java networking? Or do you have any suggestions to my issue?

Java networking question?
Prior to reading anything in the client, write something out to the server first from the client and see if the server gets it. Let the server send the response after it receives this message from client. Just want to avoid any timing issues. Also, try using the DataInputStream object and its readFully() method to see if you can get data that way.

Merry Christmas.

Wireless Networking with Time Warner Cable?

We are having lots of problems connecting to the server. A good deal of the time, our account is not present in the wireless network. I have made tons of calls to TWC, and still have the same problem. I asked for a secured wireless network and the rep said he changed the status, but it still shows as unsecured WHEN it shows. I believe that my network is being pirated by neighbors.

I need to find better service. Which company is the best for wireless networking?

Wireless Networking with Time Warner Cable?
I actually worked for Adelphia before they were bought out by Time Warner. Not many providers are going to run a wireless network for you, and even if they did, it's really not worth the money. My suggestion would be to stop paying for them to manage it for you, go to your local electronics store, and purchase your own wireless router. The configuration for it is just a few web pages built into the router itself, and if you go with a major brand (linksys, netgear) the instructions are usually sufficient to allow you to secure your network with a fairly limited knowledge of computer networking. You'll save yourself money in the long run and you can stop calling the reboot monkeys (what first level technicians were called; all they did was tell you to reset everything and if that didn't fix it, they passed you on to somebody higher).
Reply:Yep, this is a router issue, not TWC.
Reply:Sorry, it might be there respomsibilty to setup you internet and connect your network but there is no way they can configure your router from there headquarters.

Someone would have to physically come to your home and set the security in your router and configure your computers with the security key.

So if some customer support person tells you it is done they are either very ignorant of how there own system works or they are just trying to get rid of you.

I personnaly have never heard of any Internet Provider that excepts responsability of setting up your wireless network.
Reply:I believe it is your responsibility to configure your WiFi network after TWC provides the equipment to you.

Perhaps you need to read the user manual that was provided to you with the equipment and become an informed user.

Sorry, but computers and the internet are not like watching TV. You have a responsibility to learn what you are doing and how to use your equipment.

This is yet another example why people should have to pass at least a couple of tests to be licensed to use the internet much like Ham radio operators are required to get licenses.
Reply:it's not the Internet providers fault. securing the network is easy and you just need to call who ever makes the wireless router you have. EG. Linksys, etc... you can get the number for tech support from their web site.

Social-Networking Sites?

The use of social networking, photo hosting, and online video websites represent a significant shift in online user behavior.

What is your experience with these sites? What is you favorite? Do you account with any of them? What are the pros and cons? Which one do you recommend, and why?

MySpace is the leader in social networking, receiving 82% of those visits among the top 20 social networking websites in September 2006. Then, come FaceBook (www.facebook.com), Bolt (www.bolt.com), Bebo (www.bebo.com), Orkut (www.orkut.com), Gaia Online (www.gaia.com)

In photo sharing, there are : PhotoBucket (www.photobucket.com), Flickr (www.flickr.com), YouTube (www.youtube.com).

There are others, here's a listing http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_soc...

Social-Networking Sites?
Hello,

I have used various social networking, photo, hosting and on-line video websites.

I've used my space. I like it because it has live hosting.

I can meet up with friends and family. It;s so easy,

even my 10yr old niece has a page.... I don't like when the service is down or you've posted a bulletin or a comment, and you get an error code.....

I like photobucket and your file host because you can put as many pics and videos as you want.

You have personal accounts for sharing your information, and it's share away!

I was referred to OBC On-line booty Call by a friend, I thought it was too basic, and I didn't like it because the responses to find someone available can be over-whelming. You decide who you want to contact you. It has pen-pal messaging with other users,I didn't like it because it was too confusing.

I've used blackplanet too, because they have chat rooms. It's pretty easy to set up. You just can't leave a message to people, the way you expect it too.

My favorite being RLC Red Light Center. I like it because it

has live hosting. I can design my webpage the way I'd like it

to look. I can BE my 3D avatar and socialize with new people, chat, and party (they have a virtual world)

Not to mention. It is a website with adults on it. I don't always like to socialize with teenagers, that's just me.

Here's a few of the link sites to check out, one being my myspace page

and the other RLC (red light center) vs myspace.

Hope this helped some
Reply:Photobucket is my favorite photo/video hosting site. Extremely easy to use and upload. I have never had a problem with it. MySpace is very laggy at certain times of the day, and a lot of the time, after posting a bulletin, you get a message saying, "Sorry an unexpected error has occurred." Classmates.com is very very basic. I heard FaceBook really has a lot of privacy issues. MySpace and Photobucket are really the most useful. Blogger is the best though! :-)

Networking or Programming?

I am a Bsc Computer Science passed(2008) student.I have no plan to do any PG degree now.Because i hate to study.I want a job now.But i am in a confusion that in which should i specialize Networking(MCSE,CCNA,RHCE etc) Or Programming(.NET,J2EE etc).I heard a lot about the exploitation in the programming field. Also i dont like a 12 hour sitting in front of computer job personally.I like to work not to sit in a chair.

I know the opportunities in the software field and its Slary ranges But i dont know completely about the Networking career.

So i need advices...........

Networking or Programming?
I've been in networking since 1982. Back then it was called teleprocessing. Everyone else "had" to be a programmer. Of course there were only 3-4 types of programming and one type of network (for the most part). I went to school for programming and accounting but thankfully never made the leap. The entry level market for both networking and programming is probably saturated I would think. Still, I would take the networking route and always suggest that. A ccna is just a starting point so I would certainly get that out of the way. You really want to get towards a ccnp or ccie (I have the ie). There is also a design track that has been started so the np would open that path up as well. Good luck!

Here the thing is that what u like most

Don't choose field as per the scope

because its the today's hot field

I think its one of the difficult, tough field

Having great Job opportunities

Its a heart of any field

There is lots of need of network engineers, %26amp; other persons who r related to the networking field

If u r interested in this field then go ahead

Its for you

But if u interested in PROGRAMMING %26amp; u r choosing NETWORKING as looking the scope Of that field

Reply:Well, I find myself in the same situation. I decided to go with networking. I have the same feelings toward, not wanting to spend long periods of time behind a desk. The answer I came to is... Programming jobs can very easily be outsorced to other places. As is with networking it can not be as much. There will always be a need for somone to run, networking cables and setup networks and do general troubleshooting on computers. Also, programming isn't a very stable job, if you find a local job, it will very much be under a contract, once the job is done... your done. Thats the reason I decided to follow the networking branch.

Networking vs just sharing internet connection?

It seems very complicated to network pc's together. Can you just share an internet connection without actually networking the 2 pc's? And, if so, is it just a matter of a cable? I just want these 2 pc's to share an internet connection.

Networking vs just sharing internet connection?
If you only have a DSL/cable modem running directly to your PC, get a router. They are inexpensive (around $50) and allow multiple computers to share your Internet connection. Just plug the cable from each computer into the ports on the router. That's all you need!

The software approach like Windows XP's :Internet Connection sharing" isn't as reliable, it's much better to have a simple device which handles that task only.
Reply:share networking
Reply:No, you can't share an Internet connection without networking the computers together.

However, networking them together is just a matter of connecting them with a cable (it has to be a cross over cable) and configuring their network settings so they can talk to each other.
Reply:yes but to answer we need to know what type of connection ur tying to share
Reply:Actually, there is something called ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). It's really old school, but Windows will do it. Pretty much sounds like what it is: one computer directly plugged into a modem, second computer plugged into the first using the same connection. You'll probably have to research the specifics for this since nobody really does it anymore.
Reply:get a router

it will split the cont to two pcs

its very ez to do

Networking Protocols?

The question I have to answer is this.....

What are the advantages of standardized networking protocols?

My question is this.... what are standardized networking protocols...do they differ from protocols such as TCP/IP?

Thank you fo your help!!!

Networking Protocols?
TCP/IP is a standarized protocol..

In computing, a protocol is a convention or standard that controls or enables the connection, communication, and data transfer between two computing endpoints. In its simplest form, a protocol can be defined as the rules governing the syntax, semantics, and synchronization of communication. Protocols may be implemented by hardware, software, or a combination of the two. At the lowest level, a protocol defines the behavior of a hardware connection.

Reply:Yeah, what he said. If you didn't have protocol standards you would have to use sneakernet to send files from a MAC to a PC. Think about how the Internet works, and how many different platforms access it - this would not be possible without some sort of standardization.
Reply:Ponder - what is the advantage of having standards - and you;ll have the answer to your homework. It's not network protocol specific. Imagine if every car had different sized tires and used a different blend of gasoline.

What's the best way to network for someone who hates networking?

I work in a very people-oriented business. I enjoy meeting people but I'm also a little shy to start off. I also hate the whole "networking" culture because it seems so shallow and fake and all about using people. And yet, I hear I'm supposed to network to be successful. So what's the best way to network for someone who is a little shy but still well-liked yet doesn't naturally acclimate to the networking culture? What advice do you have or do you know of a good book that can guide me?

What's the best way to network for someone who hates networking?
I know exactly what you're going through. I'm very shy around new people myself and it takes a while for me to get comfortable with other people.

What I like to do when I met new people is concentrate on THEM. Don't bother talking about yourself the entire time to try and impress them. Just ask them questions about their job, where they've worked where, where they're from, what they're interested in. They'll enjoy being the centre of attention, eventually you'll find some sort of common ground that you can build on. Networking is a harsh reality in today's world and unfortunately it's very closely related to a popularity contest.

It's as much about knowing your job as it is as coming across as likeable, funny, cool, smart, successful and / or nice. Reading helps too, staying up to date on current events is great way to ensure that you always have something to say. Hell, sometimes I read the editorial columnists and steal their point of view!

Networking paper for my grad. class?

I am starting a graduate class, and I need to do a 15 page paper on anything about networking. I have chosen to do a paper on the ease of/ lack of security of breaking into wireless networks and want to write an example functioning packet sniffer.

I have googled for the basics (obviously) but prefer some helpful starter conversation and how to start on a Windows Xp system prefer, some c++ code, maybe...unless there is something easier.

thanks

P.S. This is not for illegal purpuses, as there are plenty of free high powered packet sniffers out there already.

Networking paper for my grad. class?
Ethereal (Wireshark) is the most well known sniffer. And it's open source, so you can download the source here http://www.ethereal.com/download.html

But I don't see how that will help you write your 15 page paper
Reply:Coding your own wireless packet sniffer is no small task. You will need adept C++ skills if you wanted to do that. Wireshark and Kismet are already free software packages that do just that.

Networking help?

Which is more expensive, UTP CAT5e cabling or STP CAT5e cabling?

If you want to upgrade your 100BaseT Ethernet network so that it will run about 10 times the current speed, what technology would you use?

What networking protocol was first used by Novell NetWare and is not supported on the Internet?

When using a cable modem to connect to the Internet, the data transmission shares the cabling with what other technology?

Only serious answers please and thank you

Networking help?
Sounds like you're taking some kind of weird exam.

1. Sheilded of course costs a little more

2. 10 times 100 Mbps would be 1000 Mbps, right? So of course it would be 1000 Mbps Ethernet, or in other words, Gigabit Ethernet.

3. Novell used IPX\SPX, which like TCP\IP is a routable Layer 3 protocol.

Networking degree?

What degree should i get to be a network engineer/manager? i can't find any schools that have networking in california. they all have computer science and computer information systems.

Networking degree?
A degree? Computer Information Systems, BS. You will be more likely to find a job if your education is well rounded. Esp, if you want to be a manager!

If you're just looking for an associates or certificate... check your local community college! I'm sure they will offer tons of certs/aa degrees focused on networking alone.
Reply:Google for Computer Networking courses

http://www.google.com/

You may want to start with a CCNA

http://www.cisco.com/web/learning/le3/le...

But you will really need to have a much better understanding of basic computing before you start to specialise.
Reply:DeVry in Long Beach has an undergrad degree in Network and Communications Management. I'm sure a lot of the DeVry campuses in CA have that program, or something similar. I do network management for a living, and I'm going to school to do something else because I'm not happy in it.. Be sure to do your research about career opportunities in that field, and do it because you really like that kind of work, not just for money. Good luck.

Networking hepl please plz plz plz?

i have an e machines cpu (desktop) has a printer connected to it and it is connected to the internet wirelessly and then i have a Compaq (desktop) and it connects wired and i enabled networking on the e machines and when i tried to on the Compaq it just froze and eventually said not responding it froze at the point when it ask does it connect directly or wirelessly and when i go to system and put my work group as 313971 and i do it on the e machines as well i cant find the computer what is my problem i am running xp on both what can i do to fix this problem i need to network for my printer for school!

Networking hepl please plz plz plz?
Dont use the computer name. USe the ipaddress for that machine.

If its 162.27.1.1 type \\162.27.1.1\ then you should see the printer to connect to. Double clikc it and cross your fingers because some printers work easily some dont.

Make sure the printer is shared.

On a workgroup network you wont see names properly because its just a workgroup.

It would also help if you setup your comptuers for static IP addresses.

What you are doing takes a lot of patience. But with time you can get this working. Just keep reading.

This link is good for workgroup setups.

THis link is good for setting up static ip addresses.

Reply:Start at a lower level to verify things are working.

If these are windows computers try running ipconfig /all and make sure each has a similar IP address like 192.168.1.10 (machine one) and 192.168.1.11 (machine 2). If either has a 169.x.x.x type address it is setup for dhcp and not getting an address. It sounds like this is the problem on the compaq if it froze right after enabling the netwrok. Did it say "unable to retrieve address for adapter xxx, after it froze a couple minutes?

Once you figure out the ip addresses try to go to a cmd prompt and ping the remote computer "ping 192.168.1.11" if that doesn't work none of the higher level networking functions will work like file and printer sharing.

Verify the low level IP stuff first and get back on here and let us know.
Reply:Numbers are not good for workgroup, they should at least start with a letter, and are better to be all letters. Right click my computer and select properties then computer name. Set the workgroup to an all letter name. Set the computer names to simple words too. Set the exception for file and printer sharing in each firewall. I assume the wired machine is connected to one of the router lan ports. Right click your printer and any folders you want available and set them shared.
