Hi, I'm attempting to connect to a network which consists of Windows XP PC's using a PC running DOS 6.22. The PC is modern, but runs an old OS for the software we need. It has a LAN Card in, which I have working drivers for, and I'm using Microsoft Networking Client. The problem is I cannot install the drivers %26amp; software without selecting IPX Compatible protocol aswell as TCP/IP, if I do, I get an error when I try to start the network software. If I do enable it, it tries to connect through IPX rather than TCP/IP. I have had the same networking card working fine on a different PC in DOS, but cannot get it working in this PC! Any suggestions? Thanks, Thomas
DOS Networking Problems?
in the protocol stack move TCP/IP to be above IPX/SPX it moves down the stack. sorry i can't be much more help but my net+ class didn't go that far back
Reply:I can relate. I've had the same problem.
Your problem is that the DOS packet driver you're using isn't compatible with the Ethernet chipset that's in your computer. IPX may work since it's a lower level protocol than compared to TCP/IP.
You won't like the solution. We tracked down the original author of the smc DOS packet driver and paid him to code up a new packet driver for a newer smc chipset. It was relatively inexpensive since the code change was trivial.
Caution: purchasing the same computer as the one that works may not solve your problem. Manufactures are always changing motherboard components.
Reply:Yeah... whatever the software is that's making you use DOS... Ditch it! It's not worth the pain and effort!
Whatever problem you fix today, will be there again tomorrow. In the long run, I suggest you source a long term fix and catch up with the times, whatever it does.. it can't be worth battling to keep DOS connecting with the modern world.
