Networking?

How can I set up a netwoerk with to home computers. Both are desktops. What do I have to buy. Do i have to get a router and a usb wireless card??? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Networking?
If you intend to connect both of them to the internet, then you need a router. You will also need a broadband connection to the internet!

You only need a wireless card if you can not use wires between them and the router. Routers work both wireless and wired (if you get a wireless router).

If you just want to connect the two computers and they both have a network plug (8pin wide telephone looking plug) you can just connect them using a "cross over ethernet cable".

There are lots of tutorials on the web to setup "peer to peer" networks and even more on "home networks".

I would suggest you look for a couple and you can see what is needed. You will need more detail than anyone here can supply!

Reply:you can do this in one of several ways. The easiest is to purchase the equipment and then hire someone to set it up for you...The geek squd from best buy etc....what you will need is a router...I have had good luck with the Linksys equipment that has both wireless and cable connection. If you want to go wireless you will need the Computer pci wireless card for each of the computers ( around 45 dollars each)...if you go cable connection (cheaper, more secure) you will need the computer ethernet card for each computer (around 20 dollars each) and RJ-45 cable...long enough to get from the computer to the router...one for each computer.

I know of people who have had absolutely no trouble networking their home computers...I have done it a couple times myself...the last time I did it I ended up saying the heck with it and having the geek squad pay a visit. If you try to do it yourself...well...just follow the instructions that come with the router and on-line forums (such as this)
