Networking?

Hello, atm i have modem to router then router to switch with 40m ethernet then from the switch to 6 computers and 1 xbox 360 and 1 nintendo wii i want to know would it be possible to connect a router to the switch and then have all the computers and xbox and wii working from the wireless in the router? Thanks in advanced.

Networking?
Your best solution for this would be:

Cable or DSL network bridge via the 40M cat5 or cat5e cable to your wireless router. Wireless router positioned where you are considering placing the new router. This may eliminate the need for the switch entirely. It may not. If you have wireless adapters in all but 4 or fewer of your systems, then you can leave the switch out of the network. Eliminates the need for the switch and the extra router. Saves you bandwidth resources and money for hardware.
Reply:If your router support wireless surely it will work. Then you don't even need the switch anymore.
Reply:You will need to turn off DHCP on your switch but yes, it will work. Basically you want to use your switch just as a box to plug all your cables into. You dont want any functions turned on such as DHCP, NAT, etc.

The router will handle all that stuff, but yes, it should work. I have used this method to extend the range of a network in the past.

You can also get a Wireless Range Extender (sometimes called a wifi repeater) to extender your range significantly. I have used el cheapo ones and good ones, both functioned well in buildings made of steel and concrete.
Reply:I asume the router you currently have connected to the modem is not wireless, so you will just need to take that router out and replace it with a wireless version. After that, any wireless enabled devices will be able to work with it without having to be directly connected. If you have a modern laptop, it should be wireless enabled without adding any hardware, but most desktop computers and gaming systems will need hardware added to work wireless. The best thing to do is go into any computer hardware store and bring your question with you. Someone there should be able to get you everything you need and even get you started on installing it. Just remember, if you don't want to be sharing your internet with everyone in a 300 ft radius, don't forget to secure your wireless router. If you do not know how to do this, call the tech support for the router, most companies are free and open 24 hours.
Reply:Are you looking to put all your computers and game consoles on a wirless connection.
