Networking?

Can i have a network with one computer running windows xp and the other one running windows me? and if i can is setting up the network the same are do i have to do anything different?

Networking?
How many PCs in total?

If just 2 - you only need a 'cross-wired' LAN UTP cable - they are readily available marked as 'suitable for networking 2 PCs' or similar.

You can connect a printer to one or both of the PCs.

If more than 2 machines and/or using Broadband, the easiest is by direct wired LAN UTP cable and a router (the Broadband modem may have a router in some models).

You can use SW Firewalls, but if you want a firewall in your router, then you will need more expensive equipment.

While many seem to prefer 'wireless networks', you will generally get faster LAN throughput speeds from LAN UTP cable rather than 'wireless' - and fewer security hassles - outsiders can use your Broadband connection unless you set up the security properly - such 'eavesdropping' is not as easily possible on direct wiring!

Recent laptops have a UTP connection, as should most newer desktops - if not you will need interface cards as appropriate.
Reply:In most cases with home networks the operating systems you are running on your computers doesn't make a difference. The only thing you want to be carefull of is that your computer running Windows XP has at least Service Pack 1, I've seen problems where older versions of Windows XP that haven't been upgraded have a problem connecting to a DHCP server to obtain an IP address. As long as both of your computers have a Network Interface Card and you have the right equipment (ethernet cables, router/switch/hub) you should be good.
Reply:The network could care less what operating system you are running. Nothing will be different as far as how things run.

My home network currently has a Linux server, Vista, XP Pro, Win ME, and BSD machines connected to it. They all share storage on the server and talk to my color laser printer.

Good luck,

Z
Reply:It can be done with a router

Windows ME needs upgrade because Microsoft discontinued it in July 2006 no more support for it
Reply:Get a router and I r3ecommend loading a different OS then ME. (ME is or was a bad OS)
Reply:you can make a network with both computers (im assuming you mean a wireless network) with no problem just set up the router however the directions say, make sure both computers have a wireless card and your ready to roll!
