Networking?

i just got a new laptop. i have about 2000 songs on my old laptop and some pics, videos, and documents that i want on my new computer. how would i connect the two to transfer the files. i think i have to set up a network but im retarded when it comes to this. i have the wireless router and an ethernet cable so idk. if anyone can help with detailed instructions u will be my savior. lol

Networking?
I just did this recently so hopefully I remember:

Step by step direction:

On computer 1, go to control panel and then systems. Go to Computer name and make sure you put a unique computer name and a unique workgroup name. It will probably ask you to reboot.

On computer 2, do the exact same thing, but make sure the workgroup name is the same as computer 1. It will also ask you to reboot if you changed either the computer name or workgroup name.

Then go to computer 1 and go to control panel again. Click on network connections and set up a small homeoffice network. Just follow the steps.

You should be networked by now. Just make that folder you want to share a shared drive by going to the folder and right clicking on it and going to properties. There is an option to "share this folder in network". Then just go to your start menu and click on MY NETWORK PLACES and you should see two drives in it. One for computer 1 and for computer 2 and the folders that you are sharing.

This is all assuming you have Windows XP. If you have a different OS, it might be a slight different so just contact me and tell me which Operating System you have.
Reply:Okay.

The first thing we need to know is if the old laptop has a ethernet/wireless connection. If you do, then we're alright. If you don't...well. you most likely do.

The next thing is whether your new laptop has wireless (probably does), then another easy setup.

Now, connect both to the router, either both wireless, both wired, or a combination. Now, select whatever documents, and hit copy or cut. \

When you setup the new computer, you'll be told to give it a host name. Make a note of whatever it is. Now, in the address bar (My Documents window), type "//hostame" (without the quotes)". You'll probably just see Shared Documents. Click on that folder and paste inside of it.

And that's it! Your new computer should accept the documents.

Hope this helps!
Reply:the best, safest and quick way is to burn all your content on to DVD and download on ur new laptop..... u can use these DVD in futur also if u will got any prob with your system
Reply:An easier way is to burn all your songs and files onto 2 or 3 DVD disks and copy onto your new laptop. This way you also produce back ups of your media files.
