Hello, I am attempting to network a Motorola Cable Modem to a LANGear Router to an 8 port Nway Switch. Can u do this? I have 5 Pc's and only a 4 port LANGear Router linked to a Motorola Cable modem. I am looking at buying a 8port Nway switch so I can have 5+ Pc's running all on the same network and sharing the one internet connection, can someone please explain can i do this, and how.
Thanks, Daniel
Networking?
I'm not familiar with the Nway Switch, but typically most Switches will have an uplink port that you can connect to one of the outputs of the Router. Once that's connected, the ports on the switch will act as ports from the router.
Reply:Not familiar with the brands of the equipment you plan to use, but it sounds like a pretty basic topology. First take the cable modem and connect it to the coaxial cable that exits the wall. Next take a CAT5 patch cable and connect the modem to the WAN port on the router. Finally, take one more patch cable to connect the LAN port on the router to the uplink port on the switch. Some switches come with auto sensing ports for uplinking which may obviate this step so be sure to read your documentation thoroughly. After that connect all of your PCs to the switch and you're done. Once again be sure to read all of the documentation for each piece of equipment you plan to install so you can set it up properly and ensure that default settings and passwords are changed where needed.
