I hear that if a computer on a network gets infected by a virus, worm, etc., it could affect the entire system.





In my case it is two computers on the network, desktop by way of wired in, and laptop wireless. Am I right that if these two computers do not interact with each other, the above problem would not be the case.





Am I right that the interaction between the wirless laptop, is only with the router, and not the desktop

no they are at risk, most routers establish a VLAN between wifi and ethernet by default so they can see eachother and in turn infect eachother
Reply:The way most virus's spread is through email. They do one of two things -





1. They send themselves to everyone that is in your address book.





2. They are remotely controlled by their creator to send bulk spam containing the virus out using your email address as the source.





If your running file sharing, it's possible that a virus could spread from one hard drive to another. So don't turn on file sharing, but that kind of defeats the purpose of having the network.
